What is a smartwatch for swimming?

Classic smartwatches and fitness watches are mainly known for the support they offer in various sports, such as running or cycling.

But what many people don't know is that these smart gadgets can also support you when swimming. 🏊

In addition, swim watches have two important features that distinguish them from other smartwatches:

  • Water-resistance
  • Swimming modes

Most important feature: water resistance

Smartwatches must, of course, be water-resistant for you to be able to wear it in the pool. 💦

There are many different standards and classifications of water resistance. This can easily cause confusion.

Info: In general, we recommend looking for water-resistance of at least 5 ATM, even better 10 ATM, when buying a smartwatch with swim tracking.

To help clear things up, we’ve broken down this important topic later on.

Water lock for preventing water input

High-quality sports watches for swimming also have a water lock.

This locks the display of your wearable while you are in the water.

This means that no settings can be changed by water or accidental touch. 🙌

After your workout, you can release this lock. Any liquid that has penetrated the case will then be ejected by the swim tracker.

Different swimming modes

Of course, water resistance isn’t all that matters when it comes to swim watches.

In addition, your smartwatch should support you with various swimming modes.

Not only should your smartwatch for swimming recognise your stroke type all by itself, but it should also record different data:

  • Distance travelled
  • Number of lanes
  • Average lap time
  • Stroke rate
  • Best time
  • Rest time
  • SWOLF
  • Pulse and heart rate
  • Calories burned

After your training, you will receive a detailed analysis of your session.

With a high-quality smartwatch for swimming, you can improve your swimming style and effectively improve your performance.

Thanks to GPS tracking, your training can be recorded as accurately as possible even when swimming in open water. 🙌

Let’s have a closer look at these functions below. 👇

What can waterproof smartwatches for swimming do?

Waterproof smartwatches for swimming feature many different functions.

This allows them to help you evaluate your training and improve your performance as effectively as possible. 🤩

The best smartwatches and fitness watches provide you with the following information. 👇

Lap counting

Smartwatches and fitness watches for swimming measure the distance you cover both in pools and in open water.

As a rule, when pool swimming, the length of the pool must first be entered.

This is usually 25 or 50 metres.

Afterwards, your smartwatch can automatically recognise when you turn at the end of your length thanks to various motion sensors.

Attention: Even the best smartwatches for swimming occasionally make mistakes when counting laps.

You can see the recorded distance while swimming in open water.

Open water swimming watches

Many fitness watches have built-in satellite systems to facilitate open-water swimming.

Apart from GPS, the best wearables also use other satellite systems:

Caution: Since the smartwatch is underwater most of the time when swimming, the GPS signal can be blocked. This can easily distort the recorded distance.

Pace / tempo

Waterproof smartwatches also record your pace during your swim workout.

Note: Pace is just another word for speed. However, the value is not the same as your speed. ⚠️

Your speed indicates the distance covered in a given time (e.g. kilometres per hour).

Pace, on the other hand, indicates the time taken to cover a given distance (e.g. minutes per 100 metres).

Waterproof smartwatches for swimming usually give you both your average and your best pace / tempo for 100 metres.

Swimming style: breaststroke, freestyle and more

Smartwatches can also recognise your swimming style thanks to integrated accelerometers and gyroscopes. 🙌

Your arm movements are measured with sensors.

Thanks to complex algorithms, the wearable then recognises your stroke type and can deduce the number of arm strokes.

SWOLF score: How effectively you swim

The SWOLF score is an important parameter in swimming.

It provides information about how effectively you swim. Your current performance level can then be derived from this. 💪

Info: The SWOLF score measures how many strokes you need to swim a predefined distance.

How is the SWOLF score calculated?

The time in which you swim a length is used to calculate the SWOLF score. The number of strokes you need for the length is added to this value.

The lower your SWOLF score, the fitter you are.

You can see the recorded SWOLF value in the Samsung Health app.

Pulse and heart rate monitoring

Smartwatches use an optical heart rate monitor to measure pulse and heart rate.

Attention: Results calculated when swimming are rarely reliable.

This is because water can easily get between your skin and the sensors of the watch.

Vigorous arm movements, such as those found in freestyle swimming, can also affect accuracy.

You can see the recorded pulse and heart rate while swimming in the Samsung Health app.

All recorded data in the app

After your swim training, you will receive all recorded data in the app. 📱

This way you can evaluate and analyse your training.

Info: Premium fitness watches from brands like Polar and Garmin in particular provide extra detailed and accurate data.

However, for an even more accurate recording of pulse and heart rate, we recommend a chest strap.

Which smartwatches are waterproof?

To be able to take your smartwatch into the water with you when swimming, it must of course be water-resistant. 💧

You can see different classifications for protection against water and dust.

However, just because a smartwatch is labelled “waterproof” does not mean you can safely take your watch swimming with you.

That’s why we’ve laid out which standard a swimming watch should be classified with below. 👇

IP standard for classifying water-resistance

The standardised International Protection Code provides information on how well a device can withstand various ambient and environmental conditions.

Often this classification is also simply referred to as IP code, IP classification or IP protection class.

This IP standard has the following format: "IP-XX".

In place of the "XX" there are two numbers:

  • 1st digit: Degree of protection against foreign bodies (dust, sand)
  • 2nd digit: Degree of protection against water
Info: The higher the number, the higher the protection level of your smartwatch.

IP 1st Digit 2nd Digit
0 No protection. No protection.
1 Protection against solid foreign bodies with diameter ≥ 50 mm. Protection against vertical dripping water.
2 Protection against solid foreign bodies with diameter ≥ 12.5 mm. Protection against dripping water when the enclosure is tilted up to 15°.
3 Protection against solid foreign bodies with diameter ≥ 2.5 mm. Protection against falling spray up to 60° from vertical.
4 Protection against solid foreign bodies with diameter ≥ 1.0 mm. Protection against splashing water on all sides.
5 Protection against dust in harmful quantities. Protection against water jets (nozzle) from any angle.
6 Dust-tight. Protection against strong jets of water.
7 Protection against temporary immersion.
8 Protection against continuous immersion.
9 Protection against water in case of high pressure/steam irradiation

Attention: The 2nd digit of this IP standard only regulates contact with fresh water. ⚠️

No information is given on contact with more aggressive liquids, such as salt water or soapy water.

However, such liquids can attack and damage the seals and housing of your smartwatch under certain circumstances.

Most smartwatches are classified according to IP67 or IP68.

The Smarthome Fox is seen looking at the IP67 and IP68 standards.

Attention: IP certification alone is not enough to allow you to take your smartwatch swimming. Only an ATM/bar rating tells you whether the wearable will not be damaged underwater.

Watches that are only labelled "water-resistant" or "waterproof" without a classification following it can only withstand individual splashes of water.

IP67 waterproof smartwatches

Many smartwatches have an IP67 rating.

With a wearable like this, however, you should be careful when taking it into the water.

Info: Devices with the IP67 classification are officially water-resistant for up to 30 minutes at a depth of up to 1 metre.

When swimming, however, it’s entirely possible for your watch to be underwater for longer or at a deeper level.

For this reason, smartwatches with IP67 are not suitable for swimming.

IP68 waterproof smartwatches

Many smartwatches today have an IP68 rating.

These wearables are not only completely dustproof, but also protected against continuous submersion.

Here, too, the maximum depth is only 1 metre.

We therefore advise against using these fitness watches for swimming.

ATM / Bar - Water pressure classification

To be able to take your smartwatch swimming, it should be able to withstand a certain amount of water pressure.

This water resistance is given in ATM / Bar.

The unit ATM (atmosphere) corresponds to a bar of water pressure. This means that the smartwatch can withstand the pressure of a water column of 10 metres.

Attention: Often there is also an indication in metres behind the ATM specification. However, this only refers to the technical test procedure. ⚠️

The Smarthome Fox is teaching about water resistance classifications.

A watch that is water-resistant to 5 ATM (50 metres) can therefore withstand the pressure of a water column of 50 metres.

However, this does not mean that it is waterproof at a depth of 50 metres underwater.

What ATM rating does a water-resistant smartwatch need for swimming?

What ATM classification does your smartwatch need so that you can take it swimming without hesitation? 🤔

ATM specification Meaning
3 ATM Car wash possible while wearing a watch
5 ATM Handwashing, showering, water sports (swimming and snorkelling, but no high-speed sports).
10 ATM Swimming
20 ATM Dives at shallow depths

Please note: This information only applies to new watches. Over time, water resistance may decrease.

Our recommendation for water-resistance

If you want to take your smartwatch swimming, it must of course be water-resistant.

But as we have seen, there are many different classifications here.

We recommend that your wearable should be able to withstand a pressure of at least 5 ATM, or preferably 10 ATM.

Attention: IP67 and IP68 classifications alone are not sufficient! ⚠️

Can you swim and dive in the sea with your swimming watch?

With the right classification, swimming with your smartwatch is no problem.

But what about seawater, diving or showering?

Can you take your wearable with you here without any problems? 🤔

Can you swim in the sea with your smartwatch?

Certain liquids, such as salt water or soapy water, are much more dangerous for your smartwatch than fresh water.

So, can you swim in the sea with your smartwatch? 🌊

Tip: We recommend rinsing your smartwatch (min. 5 ATM) thoroughly with clean tap water after contact with salt water.

If you do not clean your smartwatch after swimming in the sea, a layer of salt could form.

If your fitness watch comes into contact with direct sunlight, this can quickly damage the case.

Can you take a shower with your waterproof smartwatch?

And what about showering? After all, shower gel can also have an abrasive effect on the materials and seals of your watch. 🧐

Our advice: The wearable should be taken off when showering. 🦊

Frequent contact with shower gel can quickly fade the colours of your smartwatch.

And you certainly want to be able to enjoy a beautiful wearable for a long time.

Are waterproof fitness trackers suitable for diving?

Conventional smartwatches are not suitable for diving or other high-speed water sports (e.g. jet skiing).

There are special diving watches on the market for diving. 🐬

The maximum diving depth is usually displayed in metres or feet directly on the clock-face.

Brands such as Suunto, for example, produce professional swim watches specifically for diving.

Design and material

To ensure water resistance and swimming suitability, your smartwatch must not be penetrable by water.

Therefore, certain materials are used for such fitness watches.

Swimming watch case material

Water-resistant smartwatches for swimming usually have a stainless steel or aluminium case.

Additional rubber seals protect your watch from moisture penetration.

Info: Waterproof fitness watches for swimming are often a little heavier on the wrist.

Display of waterproof fitness watches

The majority of water-resistant fitness watches have an AMOLED display that is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. This material is ideal for wet conditions.

Info: Waterproof models from the Apple Watch Series are an exception. These use artificially manufactured sapphire glass.

Smartwatches should also be able to automatically adjust the brightness of the display.

This way, you can easily read the recorded data even in water and sunlight. ☀️

The best straps for swimming: silicone, nylon or rubber

We recommend a strap made of silicone, nylon or rubber for your swim tracker.

These materials sit comfortably and snugly on your wrist, even in the water. 🙌

In theory, a strap made of stainless steel could also be worn in water, but in our experience it feels rather uncomfortable.

Tip: Thanks to various interchangeable bands, you can swap your band for a sophisticated leather strap when going to a fancy dinner.

Swimming watches for men and women

Most brands offer smartwatches for swimming in different sizes.

We recommend swimming watches with a smaller diameter for the narrower wrists of ladies. 💃

On the wider wrists of men, on the other hand, larger models with a physical bezel look particularly good.

Info: Here we have reviewed the best smartwatches for women as well as the best smartwatches for men.

How accurate are the best swimming watches?

When swimming, your smartwatch is below the water most of the time.

So data can easily become distorted.

Info: In general, underwater activities are tracked less accurately than land activities.

Accuracy of lap counts

When carrying out our reviews, we often take waterproof smartwatches into the water for swimming.

However, we’ve noticed that the wearables make mistakes both when counting laps and when recognising your stroke type. 😕

Turning at the end of a length is a much more complex movement than, for example, running or cycling.

So it’s no surprise that fitness watches for swimming cannot always recognise the turn correctly.

Error with GPS and distance tracking

When open water swimming, your distance is measured using the built-in GPS.

However, the GPS signal is often distorted by the water when swimming.

Even the best algorithms are not capable of discounting such disturbances. 😕

Therefore, the recorded distance may well deviate from the distance actually swum.

Inaccurate heart rate measurement

For athletes, the measurement of heart rate is also particularly important.

However, water can easily get between the watch sensors and your skin during a swim workout.

This can easily distort the heart rate measurement, making reliable results almost impossible. 😕

Please note: Vigorous arm movements, such as those in the front crawl, can additionally affect the accuracy of the measurements.

A chest strap will provide more accurate heart rate measurements.

What else can a smartwatch for swimming do?

You can, of course, wear your swim watch for purposes other than swimming.

These smart wearables can also support you in other sports and in your day-to-day life. 🥳

Let’s take a look at what else these smart gadgets have to offer. 👇

Many different sport modes and training plans

Whether rowing, mountain climbing, cycling or running - the best fitness watches come with plenty of different activity modes.

The wearables support you not only during swimming, but also during various sports on land.

You can see the recorded training data on the Garmin Fenix 6.

This possibility is particularly exciting for triathletes, especially on Multisport watches.

Many pre-installed training plans help you to plan your workouts. Of course, it is also possible to build your own training plans.

During your workout, the wearables record all your important data and make it available to you in the companion app. 📱

Smartwatches help you get the most out of your training and effectively improve your performance with extensive fitness tracking.

Info: By the way, here we have looked at the best fitness watches for you in our review.

24/7 activity tracking and tons of health functions

In everyday life, your smartwatch is constantly recording your important health data.

The following metrics are normally included:

  • Pulse and heart rate
  • Activity tracker
  • Pedometer
  • Elevation
  • Calories burned

You can also set personal goals for your day. As soon as you have reached them, you will receive a notification from your smartwatch.

You can see the activity tracker of the Apple Watch 7.

Many smartwatches are also able to determine your stress level and energy reserves.

Some wearables can even create an ECG, measure your blood pressure and check blood oxygen levels. 💓

Smart features for your everyday life

The best wearables support you in your day-to-day activities with various smart features:

  • Viewing and replying to notifications
  • Call function
  • Music control with Bluetooth
  • Contactless payment
  • Voice assistant

Smartwatches with integrated LTE even allow you to access the internet independently of your smartphone and receive messages when your phone isn’t nearby.

You can see a received message on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4.

Smartwatches from different brands are equipped with different smart functions.

So before you buy, think carefully about which features are particularly important to you.

Info: You’ll find all the points to consider when buying in our ultimate review of the best smartwatches.

Compatibility with your phone

The most important point when buying a smartwatch is, of course, that the wearable is also compatible with your mobile phone.

Because, ultimately, you will need your smartphone to access all the recorded information in the app. 📱

Here’s a breakdown of smartwatch compatibility:

  • Apple Watch Series models are only compatible with iPhones.
  • Smartwatches with Google's Wear OS operating system usually run with both Android and iOS smartphones.
  • From the Galaxy Watch 4 onwards, Samsung's wearables are only compatible with Android phones.
  • Operating systems from other brands (e.g. Garmin, Fitbit, Polar) can be used by both Android and iPhone users.
Info: By the way, we’ve taken a look at the best Apple Watches and the best Android smartwatches for you.

Which brands offer waterproof smartwatches for swimming?

Waterproof smartwatches for swimming are available from many different brands.

You will find particularly high-quality fitness watches for your water sports from the following brands:

  • Garmin
  • Suunto
  • Polar
  • Apple
  • Samsung
  • Huawei
  • Fitbit
